What inspired me to create the artwork?

Whilst drinking my morning coffee and looking at other artists' creations, I came across some new illustrative pieces by Gret Lusky. It was #Mermay (May 2022), and Lusky shared an excellent example of a mermaid. When I saw her, I knew I had to create a mermaid, though mine would have a hidden meaning, communicating some of my experiences.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I wanted to create a mermaid in predominantly Trans flag colours as a poster for the battles we face, yet we will triumph. We have pride.

What do I hope the viewer will feel?

When the viewer comes across Mermaid 2022, I hope they see the defiance in the face of the mermaid and feel the celebration of success borne of determination.

Why did I choose this medium?

I already knew for this artwork that I wanted to produce a print, so I chose the medium of digital painting because you can control the shades of the ink better. I wanted the image to be bright and bold!

How many Limited Edition Prints will be made?

This Limited Edition has a total print run of 1. When you purchase the art print, you will receive a Certificate of Authenticity and a numbered, dated signature in pencil on the reverse side.

Materials used to create the artwork

Mermaid is a digital painting created using software called ArtRage. This limited edition print is on Hahnemühle 308gsm paper and uses Giclée printing techniques which offer an 80-year archival life span.

Framing and Installation of the artwork

This artwork does not come with hanging/installation hardware. I decided to keep this artwork unframed with unfinished edges to give the buyer greater display flexibility. Whilst you are organising your professional framer, I would recommend keeping the print somewhere dry and following my care tips whilst storing the artwork:

  • Avoid applying pressure or weight to the print.

  • Avoid any surfaces that could rub against the surface of the print.

  • Limit the number of times you touch the print's surface with ungloved hands.

I recommend speaking to a professional framer for the best solution for hanging/installing the artwork in your chosen location.
